Musings by Mieke Buchan

"What I love about travelling on my own is that you meet people You focus on looking out, whereas when you're travelling with a couple of people, you're focused on each other."

"I do a bit of teaching and mentoring and I often say, Jump off the cliff and build your wings on the way down. Even if you get blown against the rock face, you can still find a way up. Persistence and determination, I think, is everything."

Fun

Pursing my passions is keeping me out of trouble.
Being in the position to explore new possibilities, is exciting and inspiring, even if at times it does test my time management skills, faith and ability to survive on four hours sleep.

Anzac Day & Mum's Birthday

Lest we forget.

Anzac Day provides an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on the contribution of the Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women veterans.

We can never imagine what they endured and the sacrifices that they and their families made, in honour of our country and to enable us to celebrate such a liberated and affulent future.

Moments like these, make me so proud to be an Australian and honoured to be able to continue in the tradition of this service.

Anzac Day is also my Mum's Birthday.

Love you Ma

Montalto Sculpture Prize 2013

Frank Veldze
Dreaming
2013
Galvanised steel, wire mattress frames.

Dome: a splice of contemplation and observation. Inside you look through the spaces made by the circular vortexes, to the sky above and the world beyond; to nature’s endless cycles. Veldze concludes "to a dreaming older than me... and listen to the wind, and the grasses whispering".

Roh Singh
By the nights sky (constellation)
2011
Acrylic, solar lighting system.

Sculpture involves a spatial awareness and ever changing perspectives as you move around and relate to each art piece. In By the nights sky (constellation) Singh wants to challenge this idea of perspective and of form within the space. This constellation like design has lighting at each dot and at night mimics its own floating constellation.

Joanna Rhodes
Lou Lou
2012

Rhodes, would love to travel to Africa to study of elephants and the opportunity to see them in their natural environment. Concluding 'to observe their social, matriarchal groups, as they say that they are more human than a human; which is maybe why they evoke such strong feelings in us. I wonder its is true that they grieve loved ones'.

Autumnal skies and sunshine, rose Moscato, good company and plenir art... I can't ask for more.

Exchanging inspiration

It has been a enjoyable and enriching experience to be able to share my thoughts, knowledge, experiences, and perceptions with La Trobe University nursing students. They were very motivated, and engaged with the clinical placement and responsive to feedback, discussions and professional guidance.

Above a photograph of our future Graduates, at our farewell dinner.
Below, are some inspirational resources I shared with my students (quote/image from Top Cats Exhibition, Melbourne 2013; video link to TED talk by Steve Jobs; and poem, Our deepest fear by Marianne Williamson.

Steve Jobs. How to live before you die.

Our deepest fear...

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure about you.

We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles

Right path

Don’t settle. Don’t finish crappy books. If you don’t like the menu, leave the restaurant. If you’re not on the right path, get off it.

Shadows

Don’t depend too much on anyone in this world because even your own shadow leaves you when you are in darkness.
